But it can't have helped her to be feeling sick in an already rather stressful situation.

John did unwittingly find something of the solution - he gave Susan a demanding job - steering while he went forward - to distract her mind. I can well believe that this helped but doubt whether it would have provided an instant and permanent cure. From my own experience both Susan and Titty got over it remarkably quickly.
