I have to disagree with John on his comment about Japan wanting to move on from the past. Sadly Japan, after the dropping of the two nuclear bombs, took the attitude that it alone was a victim. This is not just my opinion but that of a number of expat. Japanese who have settled here and been exposed to the larger range of historical thinking than is and has been available in Japan. Successive Japanese governments have refused to either admit or compensate victims of atrocities across the Pacific and South East Asia since the end of WW2, and legal action has been stonewalled for many years in that country. While China is not at all innocent of similar behaviours, Japanese intransigence on this issue means the tensions in the region will only escalate.
The whole issue is very sad.
