Jonathon:

Thank you for the note. I downloaded the Coast Guard publication and have read it overnight. It does contain an excellent treatment on wood screws and boat building terminology. For all those readers of this missive, who wonder at the arcane terms used in the discussion on the Mary Anne, I suggest reading the list of terms in the CG book, and looking at the pictures, would help a lot with understanding the heck what I am learning about.

I had used a three step process to drill the holes for the wood screws. I had never previously used wood screws. I put in a countersunk hole, moved to a hole that matched the shank diameter and finished the last half with a hole that matched the root diameter. I used epoxy at the lubricant. I have no intention of taking those screws back out of the holes.

I had often looked at pictures of the Fuller bits - but was a bit daunted by the price at 50 for a set of five. I would need all five in the end.

I discussed said purchase with Anne and she asked about the cost benefit ratio. Which considering I have 200 such screws to drive is a good point. I pointed out that a trip to the Dr. with an infected hand would cost more than 50 bucks. She laughed and agreed.

I will think a bit longer on that one as it is a balancing act - buy the tool that gives you most bang for the cost and try not to spend more than 50 per month. I really want a table saw. Hard choices have to be made at some times in ones life.

There is a reference to a publication - Merchant Marine Safety Instruction No 14-60 in the CG book. I can not find any reference to the book on the web (except in the CG publication) or the WORLDCAT library catalogue. Has anyone heard of this book?

John
