While it can be fun speculating on future pairings (and future lives) it is interesting that there is so little of this in AR. From experience of my own children and their friends, speculation about "what will we be" starts early in life (and changes frequently -- at five I wanted to be a long-distance bus driver).

There are one or two references to John and Roger going into the Navy. In GN Dorothea envisages a future with Dick traveling around in a boat like Pterodactyl with her to look after him. The Swallows (notably Titty) talk of staying on Wild Cat for ever and of Mother never going away.

Otherwise I recollect no discussion of future employment (and it was typical of the time that the only passing references are for boys), marriage, children etc. My memory may be at fault, but I do not remember anything on the lines of "If I have children, I will/won't let them do X." They all live very much in the present or in their fantasies (again, especially Titty).

On the quite different topic of polite Texans, I cherish a slide I took (outside San Antonio) of an official state roadsign reading simply "DRIVE FRIENDLY". This says much for the Texans' good intentions, if not for their good grammar.
