I gree, except that I hope there are not too many occasions over the coming year on which we have to retreat into the hut so as not to be overheard.
On '3 million cheers", its first use seems to be in chapter 22 of Coot Club when Port and Starboard are reunited with Tom, and the D's: it appears to be said by Tom or one of the D's in response to the news that P&S do not need to return for a week.Was it, perhaps, not an invention of Nancy's, but a common expression in use among young people at the time?.
