I think the public schools where the Swallows went would have been based on AR's own public school at Rugby.
Generally the three term year is correct and, based on my own public school experience of the 1950/60s, had a month's holiday over Christmas, a month at Easter and a glorious two months in summer. This seemed to tie in with friends at other public schools.
However we only had three days at half term and one Sunday each quarter term. This was because school was 6 days a week with games on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. This had to tie in with other schools - or there would have been nobody to play against!
My friends at state schools seemed to have only three weeks at Christmas and Easter with only six weeks in summer. But they only had five days a week at school.
