Thanks Ian, I quietly hoped that you might have a spare moment to pop into your attic. These were the messages that I was referring to. I'm also quite content that P.H. has given away 10% of Peggy for me to speculate with.

Iain Hobbs's suggestion of a cover up regarding the Amazons seemed rather far fetched, but his point that on the basis of the published material we know much less about originals of the Amazons than the Swallows is indisputable. It is reasonable to ask, why this should be the case.

If the Ransome's acquaintance with the original Amazons was contemporary with his contacts with the Altounyans (as would be the case with the Marshall sisters) the lack of material about the former seems distinctly odd. Iain has made this point and concluded, "Conspiracy!"

If we reject the conspiracy hypothesis as unlikely then we must look to another explanation. Does anybody know exactly when the Crossley girls were painting their boathouse with a skull and crossbones and sinking their father's house boat? (Iain are you still out there somewhere?)

If it can be proved that this was at the time AR was at school in Windmere, i.e. before he started leaving a paper trail of letters and other written material for future researchers, then we have a solution to the Hobbsian conundrum. We don't need a cover up. AR’s first brush with the original Amazons would have left very little evidence.

There is yet another line argument. "Nancy Blackett" is all persuasive. She is the only one of AR's character's to have had a boat named after her. AR writes somewhere something to the effect that she takes on a life of her own when he is writing and tries grabs centre stage from the other character’s. Perhaps she even influences AR's final choice of partner? All compatible with the prototype Nancy being an EARLY powerful childhood influence.

That's enough. Treading carefully on the creaking floorboards of amateur psychology I will return to my own attic and another spell of hibernation.
