Arriving from the States on BA you go to Terminal 4, and as Owen says, you have to take a shuttle bus to Hatton Cross tube station. US airlines arrive at Terminal 3, and you can walk straight to the Underground.
If you are wandering around London, buy a Travelcard at the Airport station. It covers all London buses, tubes, AND mainline trains in the London area (e.g. Greenwich). Also if you want a river trip, it usually gets you a discount. £6.00 for a day's go-as-you-please travel.
