I'm sorry, I really have to take issue with Dave Bamford on his pronunciation of Launceston. I was brought up in west Cornwall where his 'Lawnston' WAS most frequently used, but when I worked for 5 years just 20 miles N. of the place, I found that the locals of E. Cornwall/ W. Devon call it 'Lanson'. (Rhymes with 'Ransome' -nearly!) I even found an old milestone with Lanson cut on it. - I have used this pronunciation ever since - but most people don't know where I'm refering to. (- no change there!) Its all to do with lazyness and language evolution - but I'm sure there an element of treasuring insider's knowledge, and being one up on the visitor.
Cousin Jack.
