I am puzzled that you are drilling for the nail heads, John. It is not usual practice to recess the heads any more than can be done during the hammering on of the rove. Are you giving yourself more work than you really have to?
I also concur on the finish advocated by Laurence. Deks Olje is very easy to use, lasts well in the sunshine, and has a nice soft satin lustre which I prefer to the gloss of varnish.
