Today (and ever since I first came to Lowestoft in the 1960s and probably long before that)the Government owned Fishery Research Vessels of the Fisheries Laboratory have been based in Lowestoft. Ransome may well be meaning one of these.

However Fishery Protection Vessels (warships)have often been here as well, and were certainly present between the Wars.

But I have never heard of either being adorned with reindeer antlers nor seen any pictures of this, and I have seen hundreds of pictures of the Lowestoft fishing industry. However Ransome certainly came here during the 1930s and I can only assume that he described what he saw. Perhaps the research vessels had been carrying out studies of the seas around the North Cape.
