Thank you for these thoughts, Laurence. In 1962 I had a 1934 Morris 8 Saloon, I could open the windscreen partly and peer through that. I never thought of opening the sunroof and looking through that. Motor cyclists' goggles were essential. I probably did a passable Mr Toad impression with a cap and my scarf wrapped round my neck.
I had always assumed that Mrs Blackett was driving, as on the return from the Dixons' to Holly Howe it says that she drove off. I had also assumed from PP that Rattletrap had been around for some time.
Perhaps in SD the GA had a foreboding about what was going to happen in P&M!
More probably with her insistence about the way things were done in the old days, she would have thought the carriage was more appropriate. She could be seen (and admired!) in the carriage. Also the steady pace of a carriage is good for seeing and commenting on the surroundings.
