Dr Dudgeon seems to think that the affair with the Hullabaloos was over, and says that “They’ll have forgotten about it themselves this morning .... unless their livers are badly out of order”. But Tom thought otherwise, as his father “had not heard the anger in their voices when they were talking to the old lady of the Teasel” (Chapter VII, page 85 hb).

And Mrs Barrable says (Chapter VIII, page 98 hb) that “they haven’t any (sense) to start with, and when men begin making bets with each other, there’s no end to their foolishness”. On Horning Staithe the Hullabaloo woman slaps the fat man (un-named) for saying that as she is not wearing skirts she (‘Livy) does not need to worry about Joe’s rat , and says to the red-haired man (Ronald) that “You’ve made us look fools enough already” (page 94 hb). A suggestion of sexual rivalry here, as well as the bet?
