Peggy acts as a calming influence on Nancy. Nancy would never have been
trusted to go out in a boat by herself. Peggy is "grown up" from
the start, so cannot develop much. She often replies to Susan's rather
sensible (but boring) ideas, and in doing so it means Ransome spares
Nancy or John from commenting on mundane matters like "buying eggs" or
"cooking". This keeps their adventurous characteristics intact.
