Lighterage was used on the Thames until the demise of London Docks. I remember tug-hauled barges working into (ex GWR) Brentford Dock until its closure in the late '60s. Also barges towed up the Thames by tug were then hauled by small tractors along the Grand Union Canal between Brentford and Southall right up into the 70s.
