What little I knew (until today) about the Maunder Minimum derived from memories of a radio programme I heard as long ago as the late 1970s, about the then-recent work of a then-young researcher. A web search now reveals that this researcher must have been J.A. Eddy. It was he who coined the name "Maunder Minimum" for the near-absence of sunspots around the time of the Little Ice Age, and suggested that the two were linked. (They also more or less coincided with the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King!!)

The web search also shows that Eddy's theory is not as well-established as I assumed, and that some of the people who still believe it are among those who deny the human contibution to global warming - which brings back to George W!
