From a personal collection point of view I'd rather have a book that 'feels' old. From a 'conning' point of view there are considerable differences between the dustwrappers of different editions. I have in front of me CC 9th edition 1949 and the 1999 edition. The listings on the back are different with different quotations (probably the best give-away of a later dustwrapper would be a later published book reviewed on the back), and the front is different - 1999 'author of Swallows and Amazons', 1949 'author of 'Swallows and Amazons', 'Swallowdale', 'Peter Duck', 'Winter Holiday'. (The bar code on the 1999 version gives the game away too, as does the price (9s and £12.99)) If I ever come to sell one it'd be the 'new' one though.
