Peter, surely the pork pies you describe can only have been warm - otherwise they would have not only burnt through the table below but also the floor below and set fire to the contents of the coal cellar. The house would have burnt down together with all other back to backs in the vicinity and perhaps the whole of Chapel-en-le-Frith.
(This has been typed in my own regional accent!)
