we are left in no doubt about Ransome's position on . . . the role of women

I am afraid I am left in enormous doubt about AR's position on the 'role of women'. On the one hand we have Susan and Peggy always disappearing into the galley to prepare food, while on the other we have the strength of character and independent thinking of Captain Nancy.

Is it too heretical to suggest that maybe Ransome just didn't have 'a position on the role of women' - in which case 3 million cheers?
