I can't speak for the present officers of TARS, but I was their treasurer when the question of Nancy Blackett first came up. The decision was to have no part in owning her, but to provide, first, a lot of moral support in the early stages, and then regular financial support. The 2004 accounts show £600 for each of the previous two years, and for all I know that remains policy.
That is a very different approach from investing TARS' own funds in New Swallow. Peter H has pointed out most of the obvious snags, and it does strike me as a rather more restrictive activity than the Society's present programme. Besides the potential for ever-increasing expense. I could even drag the Bloodnok thread back to this one by mentioning another favourite quote:
Bloodnok (to recruits): We will now take the regimental oath. Open your wallets and say after me, "Help yourself."
Recruits: Help yourself.
Bloodnok: Thank you.
