As I understand it - and I know little beyond what is in Christina H and Roger W's books - AR was taught to sail as a young man in Swallow 1, presumably in the early 1900s
He then married, went off to Russia, came home remarried in the '20s and was living near Windermere in 1928 when the Altounyan family came to stay for the summer with Grandpa Collingwood. Ernest Altounyan (married to Collingwood's daughter Dora) and AR then jointly bought the two dinghies, Swallow(2) and Mavis, and AR got Swallow (2) when the family returned to Aleppo.
