I think that among the reasons I find Secret Water unappealing are: John displays a boring priggishness which doesn't show up in any other of the books; the general muddiness of the setting does not call up a pleasant imaginary picture; and finally the newly introduced characters (the Eeels) are not clearly defined or particularly interesting. I agree with Dan that the introduction of the Amazons fails to redeem the rest.
