I could probably set it up with a piece of wet string and some rubber bands, for that matter, but I was running an international conference to professional standards. We had three levels of fallback in case of problems. Over a hundred people had paid good money to attend the Literary Weekend. I am not trusting an important talk to an informal and unreliable connection.
This means that the main cost was the commercial ISDN link. Unavoidable.
