You're right: nobody should collect and eat wild mushrooms without being able to tell the good 'uns from the bad 'uns. However, I'm sure Peggy and/or Susan would have been taught by their competent parents to recognise the Death Cap (responsible for the majority of fatalities from eating fungi in the UK), and to distinguish the Field Mushroom from the Yellow Stainer (which can make you sick, but which does not kill). I always thought it a pity that in The Picts and the Martyrs Jacky did not introduce the D.'s to species such as Boletue edulis, Chantarelle, Horn of Plenty or Oyster fungus, all of which would have made marvellous additions to that rabbit stew!
