The article that Jock provides a link to is, I think, an early and therefore true version of how AR came to write SA.
Later in life, however, he seems to have had a reaction against the
Altounyan family having "taken over" his book. AR certainly wrote other, less true, accounts of the origins of SA.
Hugh Brogan's biography covers this phase on pages 428-430.
