Well I had a look at "the Big Adventure" and both Titty and Taqui were interviewed with pictures of their younger selves visible over their right shoulders, however these pictures were paintings and not photos. This programme was indeed shown around 8 years ago so I think it could well be the one you are thinking of. There was also old footage of AR getting on the train going back to Russia etc.
The production date was MCMXCVIII which I think is 1998 (someone who is expert on roman numerals could either confirm or correct this!)
