Considerable scope for skullduggery, but only with the aid of a colour copier.
For a start, the price will be a giveaway - anything in decimal currency (or indeed, exceeding 9/-) is clearly a forgery. And for some books, e.g. ML, there were special wartime advertisements on the back flap.
