The word according to Google is that:
"There is some evidence that in the reign of King Narai (1590-1605)
the red flag (plain without elephant) was hoisted to salute a French
ship.
On www.crwflags.com under flags 1817-1855 (Thailand) there is a section on historical flags of that nation but nowhere is there to be found one other than red (or red background)!
According to Anna Leonowens (who I guess was the I in the King and..):

Nary a sign of green!
