Aha! A chance for the Professor of Applied Pedantry to strike again. The correct quotation from Gertrude Stein is "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose" (no "A" before the first "Rose"). It comes from "Sacred Emily" (1913), a poem included in Geography and Plays. This must rank as one of the most-often misquoted lines in poetry (do I sense a new competition looming?)
As my hobby is Geography, I am not sure Stein -- despite the title of her collection -- appears on many reading lists for that subject. I do recollect a poem about her, linked with British sculptor Jacob Epstein and Albert Einstein. From memory...
I don't like the family Stein;
There is Gert, there is Ep, there is Ein:
Gert's poems are bunk, Ep's statues are junk,
Nor can anyone understand Ein.
Uncultured as I am, I find myself in sympathy with those sentiments.
