My brother is a mines inpsector, he has brought enough bodies out of coal mines to teach me the dangers.

We have soft clay soils in NSW and coal mines so it is not safe to leave a drift open. Occasionally we get an old pit open up and the Mines Subsidence Board has to come in and seal it up. The mines in NSW can be several kilometres from the surface to the face.

I think the Coal Board are also afraid of the old coal mines being set alight, so they seal them up. There used to be an old entrance near our place, it was in solid rock and was fun to explore. Last time I went past it was gone.

I accept my previous comment and still agree with them when we are talking about children of a reasonable age, aka John Susan etc. But what happens if a 5 year old wanders off and finds the mine entrance.

As always it is a difficult issue of safety versus access. But we are getting closer to a Nanny State, which is the opposite to AR's ideas.

Sorry I am still lost as to which CSS post you are refering to. They take a lot of energy for little return on the board.
