Nancy B signing picture in S&A

The first few books were originally illustrated by professional illustrators.
In Peter Duck - which was 'written' by the S & A - the pictures were drawn by
AR but attributed to the children. (...illustrated mainly by themselves" on the flyleaf. I also seem to remember that in Missee Lee many of the pictures are 'signed' by the children.

These pictures were such a succcess that AR illustrated all the following books, and did new sets of illustrations for S&A and Swallowdale. I would guess - and its only a guess - that he started with S&A, and was initially going to have the 'drawn' by the children, so signed it Nancy.

Presumably he decided against this, but forgot to remove the signature.

Any other theories?
