We thrashed this out quite recently on Tarboard and after a longish debate a consensus seemed to converge around the hypothesis that "Rattletrap" could have been a slightly caricatured Crossley 25/30 "Manchester".
I wrote to the Crossley Register about this hypothesis and although they acknowledged my query as yet there has not been a definitive answer.
