Thanks for those various references, the only one which I have come across was in 'Chimes from a Wooden Bell'. Trojan did make a three speed epicyclic gear box, but it refers to Rattletraps gears being crunched by Mrs Blackett which it is not possible to do with an epicyclic gear box. Also these three speed boxes were only fitted to the hugely unsuccessful 30's Trojan car the Trojan RE, which does not look anything like Rattletrap. I think that you are right and Rattletrap is a combination of more than one of Ransomes cars.
