David Carter suggests the following itinerary:
Windermere dep 2.18 pm
Carnforth..arr 3.21
.................dep 3.56
Leeds New..arr 6.24 Change to Leeds Central station
L. Central dep 6.40 Leeds (New) was not changed to City until 1938
Harrogate. arr 7.22
There is only one possible objection to David's theory. He is working from the 1933 railway timetable, but AR was writing in 1942, in the middle of the war. Given that we were then constantly urged to send waste paper to 'salvage', not to mention AR's habit of moving house, is it not more likely he was using a recent timetable?
If the GA was undertaking the journey today, the nearest equivalent would be:
Windermere dep 3.32 pm
Lancaster. arr 4.14 (Windermere trains don't stop at Carnforth)
.............. dep 4.53
Skipton... arr 6.03
.............. dep 6.16
Leeds..... arr 7.07 (all one station now in Leeds)
.............. dep 7.29
Harrogate. arr 8.00
A slightly quicker journey, but one more change of train.
