When Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone first came out in paperback, it was issued in a children's edition with a cover reflecting the story, and an adult's edition (£1 extra) for those not wishing to be seen reading a children's book in the commuter train.
Its cover was a photo of an obviously American train, not identifiable by me, but with loco No 602 giving off dense black smoke. The photo credit is O Winston Link, so I suppose it's the Norfolk and Western Railroad.
Why the publishers thought this would do for the Hogwart's Express out of King's Cross has never been explained. Perhaps I should ask them.
