If there is anything even mildly autobiographical about Captain Flint, it is difficult to imagine Ransome portraying himself as a failure. Captain Flint may like the drive that pushes some towards the equivocal success of getting and spending. On the other hand, he has considerable gifts: a delight in life, a curiousity supported by the means to dabble and enjoy. He certainly knows ships and the seas and most importantly a heart big enough to enjoy the children and learn from them. Captain Flint at his finest is shown by his generous and un-adult like favor when John puts Swallow on Pike Rock. His refusal to criticize and all the work he does to get Swallow ready for sailing show a man of very admirable character. A very fine retired pirate!
