I learned to sail in the sea inlets on Kerry, S.W. Ireland. Nothing unusual, but I did learn to tack with the wind aft. This was because my instructor made each board end up at a waterside bar where he would take on much needed Guinness.
Rowing was learned in the School CCF Naval Section on visits to Ravens Ait on the Thames. I suspect I never reached John's "Naval Style" rowing standard.
