So he does. And just like in "Escape to Persia" where getting to the "Oxus" was by far the most interesting part of the story Ransome gave up when he didn't have a continuing story line that he thought was up to his standard. Or maybe this time he couldn't overcome Evgenia's objections.
(I'm certainly glad he overcame them in the case of The Picts and the Martyrs)
