Well there you go... I agree about GN, which is like ML in that I haven't re-read either in years and years, but I love PM and read it again only this year. It also contains my favourite single passage from the AR books, as Dorothea drifts off to sleep at Beckfoot (JC 1948 p 27, the last para of Ch.2).

Just as well AR was the master of the series, and not one of us...

As for what happened. Well, AR was getting older, he was ill and the success of the series meant he no longer had to produce a book a year to keep afloat financially. I'm not the slightest bit surprised that the fire went out.
