John,

Walton-on-Naze is well worth visiting. I have very fond
memories of the place in the 60s. I learned to sail here. Alas
the little clinker built gunter rigged dingies can no longer be
hired on the boating lake. It was also here I first encountered
real Ransome geography and people who had met the man himself.

Arm yourself with a copy of the tide tables and see how far
you can walk in the direction of Flint Island. But respect
the restricted access times as part of the route is across a bird
sanctury.

Walk along the road the Swallows took to the edge of the Red
Sea and then walk along the tops of the dykes as far as your
curiousity and stamina will take you.

If you get as far as the old canal you will be rewarded by the
rotting frames of an old sailing barge. The stone blocks taken
from old London Bridge are still there.

Happy exploring!

Jock
