"Amazon" could have had a galvanised steel centreboard, but if it's really iron then it's either cast iron or wrought iron. A cast iron centreboard would be too heavy for the Amazons to handle and would probably sink "Amazon" if she capsized. A wrought iron centreboard would not need glavanising. The Talyllyn Railway locomotive Dolgoch was built with a wrought iron boiler in 1866 which continued to give good service until 1952!
