I'm pretty sure that the book is "Swallowdale", and the footnote is appended to the scene in which Captain Flint says that he will cover the cost of repairs to the "Swallow", by way of thanks to the Swallows for saving his Life, because his book is selling well. It reads, from memory, something like:
"Mixed Moss, by a Rolling Stone". 1st edition 1930, 8th edition 1931."
