I have the Intructions on Posting a Link but can't understand them!!

There are two ways of posting a link. The "easy way" and "the difficult way". The easy way we have already considered. For those who were looking out of the window at the time, you will find the method here.

Today we do it The Difficult Way

Preamble.

Q. Why do it the difficult way when Ian has done all the fiddly bits for you and reduced the process to just filling in two boxes?

A. Ian's method gives you a very nice hyperlink at the end of your posting. But sometimes you may want one or more words of your message to be the hyperlink. (See the second paragraph above.)

Q. What's a hyperlink?

A. Sorry, should have explained. A hyperlink is some text that you can click on. When you do, it does something exciting such as zooming you off to another WWW address.

The method

1) Go to the page that you want to link to. Copy the WWW address from the browser window e.g. http://www.lydiaeva.org.uk/lydia_eva_great_yarmouth.htm

2) Go to "Post a Comment" or "Start a New Post" on Tarboard.

3) Write comment.

4) Just before the words in your comment that you want to be the link -

    a) type ' < '
    b) then type ' A HREF=" '
    c) then paste the WWW address that you have previously copied, e.g. ' http://www.lydiaeva.org.uk/lydia_eva_great_yarmouth.htm '
    d) then type ' "> '
    e) now type the linking words e.g. ' steam drifter. '
    f) then type ' < '
    g) and finally type ' /a> '

Important, ignore all single quotes, do type in the two sets of double quotes, DO NOT use 'RETURN' or 'ENTER' to start a new line.

So if I follow my own instructions, I get steam drifter.

And that's all there is to it! Tomorrow, we discuss linking to images and the question of digital copyright. Class dismissed.
