Thanks to everyone who has replied and kept the debate going. One important point which I regret I did not make clear - I was not referring solely to Tarboard, in fact I agree that Tarboard is noticeably more ordered and friendly than other comparable forums. I really meant all the administrative and leisure and communal activities which AR-lovers participate in, no names no pack drill. I would obviously wish to avoid any ad hominem arguments.

I am still not convinced that reading AR is a good thing for absolutely everyone. My evidence is the number of inexplicable off-net 'kerfuffles' I have witnessed - behaviour so at odds with the standards of behaviour and expectation of the S&As that one wonders if these people have really read the books and how much did they take in? An argument against this is that these people would have behaved in this way anyway, whether they had read AR or R.L. Stevenson or for that matter, Jeffrey Archer.

A good point has been made about the comparative newness of books specifically written for children. However, I think that AR, unlike RLS, did write deliberately for children - surely the text indicates that. He managed to incorporate enough subliminal adult humour to make reading rewarding for an adult. But you have to absorb all the children's material as well, about naughty Roger and bossy Susan, and as for Nancy's effect on adult readers, oo-er, I would not like to hear a psychologist get going on that. Perhaps there should be a sign at the end of AR's books (rather like the 'Drive on the Left' signs at UK ports), saying 'You are now re-entering the adult world - you cannot tailor it to suit your imagined fantasies and personal moral framework, and do please remember other people's feelings. Take care.'
