There is problem with the number of boys relative to girls going onto higher education. Only in engineering subjects do boys still outnmuber girls.

This is not to detract from the excellent job that has been completed since the early 1970's by the education system in raising the number of women who succeed at education. I can not think of a better word than succeed.

One of the problems identified by a psychologist I know at Church is the lack of socializaton of boys at a young age. Society as a whole does not expect them to conform, as it does for girls. Society as a whole does not encourage boys to read at a young age. So the difference introduced in acceptable behaviour between boys and girls by the age of 4 has marked the boys for life if they are a bit slower than the rest.

Reading to your children is very important. This was one of the reasons why AR and JKR are good in getting boys to read and girls of course.

I wonder what we will be saying in 100 years about all of this stuff.
