That is one of the things I noticed when I read S&A and watched the Virginia McKenna film, with my daughter (then aged 6). The stories were far more 'real' and 'possible' to me growing up in the sixties and seventies (little real change in the 30/40 years since they were written) than they are to my children growing up in the early 2000s (70 years on). How technology has changed our lives in the last twenty years! having said that, she loves the books and enacts the stories in the garden, rather than in the bomb sites and derelict wastelands my siblings and I had to use. The power of empathy and imagination conquers all!
