Andy G asked " The core values of the books will never change - children make friends, support one another, play out games - but I do wonder if the technology depicted in the books, which wasn't dated much at all when I first read them in the 70s, will increasingly make the series appear like a lost world to more modern readers?"

I suspect that the main thing that will have changed is not the superficial technology of the books, but the core parental attitudes that plausibly considered it acceptable for young children to be on their own doing things like sailing and camping without constant adult supervision and guidance.

Imagine Ransome's series with a Mrs Tyson figure looking after the children at every turn.
