You have to be right about John. We know that the real Roger was asthmatic and did pioneering work in that field, so I'd say smoking- no.

But the D&Gs would have been on inshore boats, probably, and I'll bet they would smoke a whole lot. Probably Woodbines.

But Dorothea now... A modern girl. Maybe a Radar Op in the war, writing in the evenings to cheat the boredom. A candidate for Craven 'A's if I ever saw one.
