My father smoked for a year or two from his late teens until he was called up in 1942. That was basically to curb the hunger pains as the civilian rations did not seem sufficient for a young man. However, once he was in the army and eating serviceman's rations, he no longer felt hungry and never smoked again.

My mother, on the other hand smoked until she married my father in 1951, whereupon he persuaded her to give them up. However, they always had cigarettes in the house for their guests until that fashion died out.
