Much depends upon the age of the child! If small children were polled, I suspect that the Rev. A.W. Awdry would be somewhere near the top of the list!
I am very suspicious of lists of children's books compiled by grown ups. We all want our children noty just to read, but to enjoy, the books that we enjoyed.
